January & February's Activities

I can't believe how fast the months are flying by... well this past month or so - I've just mainly been trying to declutter and get the rooms all ready to sell. We are hoping to finally get the house on the market this spring. The cleaning/decluttering process always takes longer than I thought it would. Anyways.... let see what else we have been doing....

Dayton & Emma's favorite outfits, they love wearing these warm sweats (not just on Halloween) - and then they always have to watch a Winnie the Pooh movie when they wear them.

Mel did a school play for MLK's day. She so enjoys doing plays and acting that next year (where-ever we are) - I need to find an drama/acting group for her - as this is her passion.

Melanie getting an award for Outstanding Behavior/Character at their school assembly :)

I made these pillow cases for the kids for Valentine's Day. They are really easy to make. I eventually want to do a pillow case for each month. (I already made them Christmas pillow cases.) This year I will probably make them pillow cases for around 5-6 holidays (some for Easter, Spring, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc.) - and then next year I'll make the remaining 5-6.

If you go to Walmart, you can buy the fabric at a great price (about $2.00 a yard). You need 27 inches of one color (the main color), 3 inches of another color (the small part of the cuff), & 10 inches of another color (the larger cuff color) - and then it takes about an hour to make each one (cutting out, sewing, & ironing). If you are fast, then it would probably take less time. If anyone wants to know how to do it, give me a call. It is really easy and a fun gift that kids love. I found some fun Valentine's ideas this year for families and couples. We did a few of them, but next year I am going to do better. Here are some of the ideas for next year if you want to use them. I posted them on my spiritual blog as: Valentine's Family Home Evenings, Family Valentine's Traditions, Making Valentine's Day Special, Lessons for Valentine's Day, A Little Attention to Valentine's Day, etc.

For Valentine's Day (I was at urgent care for most of the day - will explain that later), and then that night Don & I went out to eat Italian (my favorite) and then to our stake Valentine's dance. The stake combined with another stake and held it at the Camas High School (& now I know why our property taxes are so high - that high school is very, very nice!!). They did a wonderful job decorating, they had a live band, lots of yummy desserts and appetizers, and a dance show from a local dance team in the middle. We were able to see many of our old friends at the dance. It was a fun night. I think I've only went dancing with Don about 3 times since we've been married (not a lot). One day, I would love to take a ball room dancing class with Don. I think it would be lots of fun to learn all the different kinds of dances. But - that will have to wait until we get moved to Texas.

Well, this past Tuesday - we had an eventful day. My VT were having me over for lunch. She did such a nice job with the lunch - the little bit I had (as she goes all out) - but things didn't go as planned. Well, first of all it snows that morning. I was a bit worried if I should go out or not with the snow? The kids had a two hour late start due to the snow, & Dayton's preschool was cancelled. So I wondered if I should go out - but then I told myself to stop being a wimp and go out because I have 4 wheel drive.

Well, I drive up to my VT's house. She lives farther up the mountain than we do & there is about 4-6 inches of snow at her place & the roads are not plowed & it is a mountain road that is steep and twisty (so I am very tense driving on the slippery roads). I drop Emma & Dayton off at her neighbor (who is also a friend of mine). Then we start having this nice lunch & we're trying not to look out the window and not pay attention to all of the snow that is being dumped on us. She gives us some delicious soup to start us out & in the middle of eating this delicious soup, I suddenly remember I was making chili at home & boiling the beans and now can't remember if I turned the stove off or not. I simply could not remember (I must be getting old). So I decided I better drive home in order to make sure I don't burn my house down. (about 15-20 minute drive in no snow - so about 30 minute drive in snow) .

So I drive home, & now the snow is worse. So now I am very tense from the snow and from the fear that I am going to burn my house down as it has been about 1 1/2 -2 hours since I left. I get home & run in the house and...... YAY!! I had turned the beans off. (I'm not as forgetful as I thought). Whew!! Now to get back up the snowy mountain again. So I venture out & on my way out of my driveway - I slide & backup into a tree and my back is dented & my rear window is busted :( - yes, this is our new Honda I just crashed :( So now what to do??

Well, I figure I will just go back up the mountain & pick up the kids & skip the rest of the lunch. I go back up the mountain & it is even worse snow now. On my way to pick up my kids - there is a private road that slopes down to Sandy's house (the friend that is watching my kids) & all the way down her road - I had no traction & my brakes wouldn't stop me - so I am gliding down the 1/2 mile twisty road - pumping my brakes - hoping I don't crash. Well, I do crash again - I slide off the road and hit a rock. I think oh great, now I've ruined the front of the car as well. Well, luckily no dents in the front - I just hit the wheel and dented that... I pick up the kids & call my VT & tell her the mess that has happened & that I won't be able to finish the lovely lunch she prepared. I head back down the mountain - go to Camas stop at the bank (as I had to deposit some checks that day) & then pick up Mel & Courtney - What a cold ride that was with all the cold air coming in through the windows (as I had to opened the door windows so we wouldn't be breathing in all the fumes that were coming in from the back). Anyways, we finally make it home...

So the good news is - I didn't burn down the house, I just crashed the car. But luckily it wasn't bad as in all that snow - it could have been so much worse. As my VT companion who also lives up the mountain, rolled their vehicle off the road & totalled it a couple of months ago. So now - I have resolved not to drive in snow - unless it is an absolute emergency.

Our poor Honda :(

Well, later that same evening (Don is working late that night), Dayton & Emma are cutting out crafts and Emma cuts Dayton's finger with the kid scissors. It bleeds and bleeds. I have to put pressure on it for over an hour to get it to stop bleeding long enough to put a band-aid on it. Well, I think Dayton's finger is only cut on the front side. Little did I realize until the next day when I was changing the band-aid that he had a huge gash on the back side as well. Well, he probably needed stitches but it was too late since we didn't take him right in and even if I had seen it the night before, I don't know that I would have taken him in at night with a broken rear window. I took Dayton to Urgent Care on Saturday as we were worried if the cut was healing and if it was getting infected. It looked pretty bad on Saturday and it would still bleed. The doctor told me it was healing fine, and it was not infected - just bruised and swollen. It was just taking a long time because it was such a big cut. Here's a picture of it today. (The front side is almost all head up.)

This next picture shows you what most of the lawns/fields look like up here in Camas. There has been an enormous mole problem this year. We will drive into town and look at all of the fields on the way down and most are all covered with mole holes. I don't know why this year we got hit so hard. We have mole holes around our lawn, but not in our lawn yet. (knock on wood). However our lawn has been saturated with mushroom and has some disease that has killed off about a third of our back lawn and many of our plants that we put in last summer have been chomped to death by big rodents called deer. So -- needless to say - we still have lots of yard work to do before we can put our house up for sale. Well - gotta get back to cleaning.

I'm glad Dayton's healing up with out an infection, that is quite a slice for kid scissors! I can't believe what a day you had, I felt like that when a tree fell on my car last year while I was at the kids school. That is so nice that you have nice lunches though with women you VT.

Holy Smokes!! I think that your fun snow day was motivation enough to get the house sold and head to Texas!
I love your attitude, too! In the midst of all that was going on, you were concerned for your VT'er and not being able to return to the lunch she had prepared.
You're awesome- you deserve a big ol' box of Valentine's chocolates!

OH, and by the way, I *LOVE* the pillowcases! I'm totally going copy your idea! (That is, when my kid is old enough to have a pillow!)
